What a delightful little town - personally, I think one of the nicest in regional Victoria. Didn't really know what to expect having decided to spend a few days here between Christmas and New Year. It looked cute on the website, but I did not anticipate that it would be as appealing as it is. I expected that our stay would be one of using Beechworth as the base to explore other places. We did do this, but spent many a happy hour exploring the delights that Beechworth has to offer as well. And it has so many things to offer - unusual for a town of its size.

In the first instance, the town is part of the Legends, Wine & High Country Region of Victoria.
Historically, it is regarded as the best preserved Victorian gold rush town with more than 30 historic buildings listed/ preserved and is associated with the legend of Ned Kelly and his gang. Beechworth Historic Park enables you to walk or drive through native bushland, identifying remnants of the gold rush days of the 19th century, including the famed Cemetry which contains the remains of 5,000 Chinese miners as well as the Chinese Burning Towers. But there are also plenty of cafes, antique shops, 'luxury items' shopping, galleries etc to keep you occupied in town alongside wondering round the streets identifying the various listed buildings.

Surrounded by boutique/ independent winemakers and rich agricultural farmland, Beechworth is a few kms off the Gourmet Drive of the King's Valley and the fantastic cheese, olive and bakery outlets of Millawa, Oxley and Everton.

Nestled in the foothills of the Australian alps, nature plays its part in making Beechworth a wonderful destination - Gorge Drive in the town itself, Woolshed Falls only 5kms out of town towards Chiltern and, further afield, Mount Buffalo National Park and the ski resorts of the Great Alpine Drive.

Directions: Beechworth is approx 15kms off the Hume Highway (main Melbourne-Sydney route) (exit at Wangaratta). It's approx 280kms north east of Melbourne, 620kms south west of Sydney.
3.5 hours would get you from Melbourne if you drove straight through.
