Plaza of the 1000 columns, detail
by call_me_rhia

The Plaza of the 1000 columns is located next to the Temple of the Warriors and it takes up a lot of space. It's an esplanade covered with a high number of columns built between 900 and 1200 A.D.

Walk around them to see how richly decorated they are. Although some have beein ruined by the weather, zou can still make out what was carved onto them, in msot cases. Originally the columns were also covered in plaster and painted.

They used to support a roof which no longer exists, and for this reason people have been led to think that this construction was possibly a large market hall.

Directions: chichen itza
