"Matheran" India Things to Do Tip by ashishashar

Barely 171 kms from Mumbai, Matheran was the Britisher's most popular hillstation, discovered by Hugh Mallet in 1850. Today, Mumbai has more or less reached its base, and from some points you can actually hear the din of the city faintly on the air. A special, narrow guage 'toy train' gets you up, puffing and wheezing all the way. Outside the station, kids on horseback canter past kicking the famous red dust of Matheran into your face, and the market is full of middle class families, haggling for cheap souvenirs. But don't despair. Just beyond the crass commerce lie lakes and forests where monkeys chatter in the trees and snatch bananas from children. Cars are prohibited in Matheran, so the only mode of transport --other than walking - is horseback. You will need one of these to reach the more scenic points. Both Panaroma Point and One Tree Hill have commanding views of the Western Ghats.
