"The Military Museum" Cape Town Things to Do Tip by mke1963

The Military Museum sits along the northern wall of the Castle of Good Hope, and is worth visiting for the impressive displays on the Boer Wars on the upper floor. The well presented and detailed history provides a good introduction to this ?little-known? war at the turn of the 20th Century, that set the scene for much of South Africa?s modern history.
There is also a (surprisingly interesting) display of uniforms, medals and brief histories of the regiments of the Cape Town area ? perhaps the most intriguing being the kilted and sporran-wearing Cape Town Highlanders.
There are other displays, including a sectiion on the role of South African regiments and soldiers during the Second World War. However, like possibly many others, I find it difficult to equate the ?forces of apartheid? being on the opposite side of the ?forces of Nazism?, when racial purity was so important to the governments of both. On the other hand, it causes some introspection about European and American governments who were so keen to rid the world of Nazis, yet a decade later were so unwilling to take real action against apartheid South Africa.
