Over 15,000 people participate in the Mummer's Parade in Philadelphia each year. The groups come from local clubs or New Year's Associations to compete in the spirit of good-natured fun and rewards. It is broadcast on the local tv channel, so most people watch some of the festivities on the screen then travel downtown to see some of the live entertainment. The parade continues throughout the day.

My first Mummer's Parade was a great experience--the people lining the streets were friendly and orderly. Of course, that could have been because numerous policemen were scattered around the area. I talked with people from Philly, Tennessee and New Jersey. Although the captains of the groups did not mingle with us some of the participants did, which allowed for some nice photos! The captains were clothed in the most elaborate costumes accented with sequins, feathers, bangles-- which were both gaudy and stunning. All those in the parade had funky masks or make-up.

I understand that after the parade the mummers continue their celebration on 2nd street where the clubs are located. I imagine there are some really happy mummers by evening!
