"New Year's Day Mummer's Parade--#2" Top 5 Page for this destination Philadelphia Things to Do Tip by VeronicaG

The elaborate costumes and themed scenes make this parade the extravaganza it is, but the banjo music stirs the soul and quickens the heart! I was enthralled by the sense of comradery as people in the streets greeted each other and joined in friendly banter .
It takes months to complete the flamboyant costumes and detailed scenery. Some of costumes cost thousands of dollars; many scenes have complicated movements. Once a group moves up the length of Broad Street to the viewing stand near City Hall, they are rated according to their performance.
Monetary rewards totally near $400,000 are given for the best in various categories: Comics, Fancies, String Bands and Fancy Brigades. Competing groups spend much time and money preparing and the reward is barely enough to pay for a portion of their expenses yet each year the parades goes on.
Address: Along Broad Street to City Hall
