Prospekt Svobody (The Freedom Boulevard) is the main landmark of the city centre. It is a long tree lined boulevard stretching from Mitskevitcha square on the south to the south to the Opera House on teh north. River Poltva used to flow through the city and it was used for transportation. In late 19th century during construction of Opera House it was dug in a concrete duct and today it runs under Prospekt Svobody and Opera House.
Prospekt Svobody is composed of 3 squares that are divided by transversal streets. It is a long square stretching from the north to the south, rounded by busy wide avenues with heavy traffic. There are early 20th century buildings with many shops around. With many trees it must be beautiful during the summer. Since car traffic is high here, pollution is bad. With many public transport options, it is a good place to leave or catch your bus.
