"Boat Quay" Boat Quay Tip by bryINpoland
Boat Quay, Singapore: 30 reviews and 72 photos
One of the 3 famous Quays along the Singapore River, Boat Quay holds its own against the others.
Reconized by the Chinese as an area of prosperity and wealth due to the fact that the shape of the river at it's location was similiar to that of a belly of a carp (In Chinese belief symbolizes prosperity and wealth) The area was soon built up, and by the 1860s, accounted for 75% of Singapore's shipping business.
Times change and after the opening of the shipping port Pasir Panjang, the Boat Quay took on a whole new life. Now it accounts for one of the busiest spots for a night out on the town. The old shophouses have since been converted into waterfront restaurants, pubs and clubs.
*Interesting fact: Looking at the row of shophouses along the south bank of the river. You will notice that they all stand at different hieghts. The wealthier a business was, the higher the owner built his or her shop.
Directions: Directly off Boat Quay road, on the South Bank of the SIngapore River. Downtown.
