The most well-known site in Istanbul is Sultanahmet, known to the West as the Blue Mosque. It is a massive mosque studded with 6 minarets, or towers. As only the Prophet's mosque at Mecca had 6 towers, this made the Blue Mosque very controversial when it was created in the 1600's. The place gets its name from the tiles that line its exterior that gives it a light blue hue. It has a manicured garden outside that makes for great pictures at dusk, as the minarets are flooded with light and provides a great backdrop.

Sultanahmet, as well as Aya Sophia, are easily spotted from just about anywhere in the city on a clear day or night, and it is truly an amazing sight.

Directions: In the Sultanahmet district, of course!!
