It lifts 800 tons 35 metres and uses the power of two boiling jugs and it's unique in the world.
To hell with watching boats travel through 11 consecutive locks when you can watch this beast rotate. Although it appears complex, as an engineering solution the basics are quite simple and brilliantly done. All you need is a small electric motor to turn a geared wheel that connects to a lower ratioed gear and you can move mountains; well, eight boats at a time anyway.
Getting there was a bit of an arm wrestle. Through the back streets, roundabouts, trying to follow signs. Eventually we made it but, I feel it encumbent upon me to say, there wasn't a lot else to see en route.
