Capitol Building, Washington D.C.: 169 reviews and 429 photos
The National Statuary Hall of the United States Capitol is built in the shape of an ancient amphitheater and covered by domed roof with a lantern in the fireproof cast-steel ceiling which admits natural light into the Hall. I was told that it is one of the earliest examples of Greek revival architecture in America.
The chamber floor is laid with black and white marble tiles. The black marble was purchased for the chamber, while the white marble was scrap material from the Capitol extension project. As the favorite medium for Greek and Roman sculptors and architects, marble has become a cultural symbol of tradition and refined taste.
