Capitol Building, Washington D.C.: 169 reviews and 429 photos
The guided Capitol Tour is one of my foundest memories from Washington, DC. It is a great experience to see such famous place, full of history and works of art.
HOURS (closed on Sunday!)
The Capitol is open to the public for guided tours only. Tours are conducted from 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Monday through Saturday (the Capitol is not available for tours on Sundays). The Capitol is open on all federal holidays except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
TICKETS (get them in the morning!)
I obtained free ticket for the tour at the Capitol Guide Service kiosk located along the curving sidewalk southwest of the Capitol. It's near the intersection of First Street, S.W., and Independence Avenue. See the map here. The nearest metro stop is Federal Center SW. The tickets will be obtained in the underground Capitol Visitors Center (under the eastern Capitol grounds) which should be completed by the fall 2006.
Warning: go to get tickets in the morning as they are obtained on a first-come, first-served basis. Ticket distribution begins at 9:00 a.m. daily. I was just after 9.00 and obtained tickets for 3.00 p.m. Well, it was Monday and many visitors could buy tickets on Sunday when there are no tours.
SECURITY (no liquids, no bottles!)
Open my next pictures and check up-to-date Prohibited Items List. In contract to the Smithsonian Museum NO liquids and NO bottles are allowed to bring to the Capitol Tour. Surely weapons, knives, sharp items, sprays are prohibited, no tripods as well. Cameras are allowed but no flash photography.
Address: East Capitol Street and 1st Street NW
