The West Front of the United States Capitol is the entrance for those who take the Capitol Tour at least by the completion of the new Capitol Visitor Center that is by the Fall 2006. The entrance was located on the third of five Capitol's floors. From the outside there are two, symmetrical broad stairs up to the third level. Well, they as well as the capitol grounds in front of them are closed for visitors.
The central dome looks too heavy, too high and large in proportion to adjacent two small wings covered by low domes marked by higher lanterns. There is the chamber of the House of the Representatives under the right lantern and the chamber of the Senate under the left one. I hoped to see them during the Capitol Tour. It's the oldest part of the US Capitol which was covered by smaller and lower dome till 1850s.
