As spellbinding as the Aya Sofia is architecturally one should not ignore the splendid 11th and 14th century mosiacs that can be visited on the Gallery floor. On this floor which is reached by a zigzagging stairwell from the Ground floor. Each of the mosaics is striking but most notable is the Deesis Mosaic which features Christ flanked by The Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist. Also of importance is the portrait of Empress Zoe. Personally I think these works are amongst the most impressive Byzantine mosaics that I have ever seen.
