Hiking amongst some volcanoes - Guatemala.
by skullcrusher

If you happen to enjoy hiking and climbing mountains then Guatemala is the kind of country you would enjoy. If you haven't had the pleasure of climbing an active volcano then this would be a good country to do it in. Volcan Pacaya is one of many active volcanoes in the country and it makes for an easy day trip from Antigua. It's not possible to climb it on your own due to natural and man-made issues, but that doesn't necessarily detract from the experience. Simply hook up with a good tour agency (such as Monarcas Tours) and be prepared to head for the mountain early in the morning because by the afternoon the views are often obscured by clouds.

A few things to keep in mind if you go on a climb is to:

1. Bring water and something to snack on.
2. Wear a good pair of hiking boots.
3. It helps if you use a hiking staff (there are little kids that will sell you some at the trailhead). Trust me - you'll wish you had one as you get closer to crater.
4. It would help to bring a bandana or something that you can use to cover your nose and mouth. When you get up near the crater the fumes emited from the volcano are pretty strong and it's actually hard to breath if you get a good whiff of the stuff. Using something to filter the gases helps a lot.

Happy trails!!!!! - Skull
