"Iglesia la Compania de Jesus" Colonial Quito Tip by malianrob

Colonial Quito, Quito: 182 reviews and 486 photos

Quito is famous for their churches. The most impressive in all of Latin America is La Compania which was built by Jesuits (the last and richest of the religious orders to come to Ecuador). Construction of the church began in 1605 and was completed 163 years later! It is said that it took seven tons of gold to gild the surfaces of La Compania. When you see la Compania you will be absolutely dumbfounded by the magnificence of this place.
From the outside the church looks nice but its when you go inside that amazes you. You arent allowed to take pictures inside. I didnt know that So I managed to get a fe pictures in before I was told to stop.
You have to pay a small fee to get into the church unless you are going in for mass. Once you are inside you can have a guide take you around and tell you everything you need to know. Theres an actual coffin under the altar of the church.
Every inch of the interior is covered by gold. It is truely amazing and one of the churches that are a must on a to do list of Quito.

"Locally referred to as Quito's Sistine Chapel."
