The first trains from San Francisco started in 1863. A round-trip ticket from San Francisco to Menlo Park cost $2.50 and a one-way ride took 80 minutes to cover the 29 miles (the stagecoach took four hours and only went to Redwood City). The current Menlo Park train station opened in August 1867. It was one of the earliest rail stations in California. It is located about 11 blocks northwest of the historic redwood, El Palo Alto. Today, a Caltrain roundtrip to fare zone 3 (Atherton, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Stanford, California Avenue, San Antonio, Mountain View or Sunnyvale) costs $10.50. Depending on the type of service, the one-way trip now takes 36-53 minutes.
