The Corsica coastline was and still is dotted with lots of watchtowers dating back from the period when Corsica belonged to Genua. These round Genovese towers were built along the entire coastline within sight of eachother to be able to warn the people in case foreign invaders threatened the island. Many of the towers still survived. Some of the most popular for tourist are the ones along Cap Corse and the one close to Ajaccio with the famous sunset view on the Iles Sanguinaires.
Apart from these round Genovese towers, Corsica also has two square Pisan towers, one in Nonza (a great view) and one in Porto. These towers date back from the (shorter) period when Corsica belonged to Pisa.
