Guimarães Things to Do: 106 reviews and 238 photos

This well-restored X century is located on a hill above the city, and was built by the local countess Mumadona to protect the ancient monastery located here from the Moors and the Normans. Her son, Dom Afonso Enrique, was born here. He was to become the first king of Portugal.

Walking amongst these ancient ramparts can make you start to imagine yourself as a medieval knight, especially since the grounds are quite large to allow you to escape from other tourists. Visiting this place, regardless of the strength of your imagination, will remain as one of the most impressive experiences of your life.

Directions: Just north of the old city center.
