This architectural masterpiece dominates St. Mark's Square and draws the largest crowds.
Crowned with 5 huge domes, this is is in fact the 3rd church to stand on this site. The 1st church was built in the 9th century. However, it was later destroyed by fire. The 2nd was pulled down and replaced at the end of the 11th century.
This famous church preserves the remains of the patron saint, the Evangelist St. Mark. Hence the name.
The facade has 5 doorways decorated with shimmering mosaics. Above the main portal are replicas of the famous bronze horses-the originals are now kept inside the Basilica, protected from the pigeons and pollution.
Inside the Basilica, you can admire the decorations of the walls:marble in the lower part and golden mosaics covering the vaults, the arches and domes.
The impressive mosaic floor, forming images of beast and bird, is like an enormous oriental carpet.
Everything on or in the church is simply fascinating.
