The Nelson Columnis the oldest monument in Montreal. It was put there by local merchants who wanted to be the first to honor admiral Horatio Nelson, the british naval officer who won the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Installed in memory of Admiral Horatio Nelson in 1810, it precedes the statue in London by 33 years.
