You can visit Larnach castle by driving out towards the Otago Peninsula (1/2 an hour or a bit more from Dunedin). We saw it just briefly (10 min stop to view the gardens, take photos from outside and take a very brief look inside) as part of our guided tour with Dunedin City Tours.

This is New Zeland's only castle, which is why it probably gets so much attention, even having only been built in 1870. The other reason would be the colourful history of the place.

Larnach, the builder and rich and powerful owner, who had 6 children, died from suicide in 1897, after financial problems and finding out that one of his sons was having an affair with his stepmother number 2?.. and the castle became derelict for a while. There are 43 rooms, and it's still in the process of being restored.
