The Baphuon temple, built as the state temple of Udayadityavarman II in the 12th century, is a temple mountain representing the mythical Mt Meru.
The temple has largely collapsed. The restoration efforts of EFEO started in 1960, but due to the civil war the restoration was interrupted for more than 25 years. In 1995 the EFEO restarted the restoration. During our visit in 2005 the work was still going on. The summit of the temple is collapsed, but will be restored partially. The temple was still off-limits for visitors.
At the east side the Baphuon is a 200 meter long elevated walkway, representing the bridge between the human and holy world. At the northside is the mout and the wall with a gate of the Phimeamakas.
Directions: The Baphuon temple is part of Angkor Thom. This temple is situated 200 meter northwest of the Bayon. The south gate of Angkor Thom is about 7 km north of Siem Reap, and 1.7 km north of the entrance to Angkor Wat.
