Going from Hurghada to Luxor means to wake up at 5:20 AM, if the hotel staff does not forget about that :-) Our staff did, but I have had a mobile phone alarm clock on, luckily. The tourists are not allowed to travel to Luxor on their own. A bus picked us up at the hotel, we have been going along the coast to pick the others from their hotels. Then the bus went to Hurghada central bus station where we had to wait approx. 20 minutes till it was 7:00 AM. With a smile the guide said that this is the only time schedule that works properly in Egypt. And he was right... on the second punctually all the buses went on one after another in a big convoy with the police cars in front and behind. I do not know, but so big the convoy was we were the perfect target for anybody who would like to attack us.... We have passed through the rough and high mountains with a stop at a caffe middle in nowhere. I have seen some nomads (Berbers) with kids and I really wonder how could they live here as there is nothing, not even grass. After passing the mountains suddenly a lush green valley of the river Nile opened in front of us. It was like passing to another world. Small fields around the river, men of every age working on it, alone or with a cow or a donkey. Along the alleys and avenues were big pictures or posters with the president Mubarak. Gentle lacelike mosques in parks contrasting with tiny houses without roofs. Ladies in black clothing with lots of children around, walking somewhere or just sitting in front of their houses. This was Luxor.
