Coit Tower up on Telegraph Hill

There's no getting around it - and it's so worth the walk to, and climb up, for a visit: Coit Tower.

This is where you want to go to catch some magnificent views of the city and the bay (especially at sunset).

Coit Tower is both a familiar and a favorite San Francisco landmark. It was donated in 1929 by Lillie Hitchcock Coit (an eccentric volunteer firefighter who ran around North Beach in men's clothing) to beautify the skyline. Inside, there's an interesting mural created as part of Roosevelt's Federal Art Project. It tells the story of the Depression and how it impacted the area.

My favorite way to arrive here is to hike east up the steps on Greenwich.

Under and around the tower is a lovely little park (Pioneer Park) where you can continue to enjoy the fresh air and surrounding views. Particularly quiet and peaceful toward evening.
