If the ice advances faster than it breaks down it reaches the opposite shore. Then the water on the Brazo Rico side of the lake raises even up to 30 meters comparing to the other side. The pressure is so strong that it finally breaks the ice in a spectacular rupture that lasts 2 days. The rupture used to repeat itself every 4 years but there was a 16 year brake between the last 2 (probably due to the global warming although with such phenomenons it's never sure). This unique spectacle happened in March 2004 last time - exactly a year before my visit. You can see the exact place of the rupture (a year later) on these pictures.
