El Calafate Things to Do: 111 reviews and 283 photos

The climate in the area surrounding El Calafate definitelly cannot be compared to the same latitud in the northern hemiphere which is where I live. First of all we don't have the glaciers coming down to 180m over the see level in central Europe.
Well, the temperatures here are mild, the average in summer is 18C, and in winter -2C. It's very dry - only 300mm rainfall in a year and there are strong winds coming from the west. The wind brings the humidity from the Southern Pacific Ocean and there are heavy rains or rather snowfalls over the mountains. Then the wind becomes dry and it is much faster once it gets to the plateau.
Therefore, there are almost no forests on the plateau, just dry steppe with tough bunch grases and small bushes.
