"Pleasant & Inexpensive on Upper West Side" Park 79 Hotel Tip by Jase1177

Park 79 Hotel, New York City: 2 reviews and 4 photos

The stay here was pleasant enough to make me want to go back next time I go to NYC. The hotel is a small, 6-story hotel offering mainly shared bath facilities, but several ensuite rooms as well. The atmosphere is quaint but a little worn. The room we had included the bathroom with a remarkably large walk-in shower for such a small space. The room was sparse with just a double bed, side table/lamp, small chest of drawers, a clothes rack, and small bench. Although not the most oppulent, the furniture, bedding, and bathroom does look like the management makes an attempt.

I have read negative reviews on other sites but think the reviewers expect the Ritz for a $150 or less. Yes, the small elevator can be slow. The beautiful parquet floor in the hall can lend itself to footsteps, but I really didn't notice. Things were clean and the housekeeping occured daily (although at different times).

The neighborhood is a great area for a variety of likes. Central Park is one block over, two subway lines are within a couple minute walk, great restaurants/bars, and stores. If you are there on a Sunday, go to the flea market one block south on 78th at the school there from 10AM to 5PM. Some great finds, even if it isn't a large as some flea markets downtown.

I would definitely stay here again because it was decent enough in a great area for a good price. Beware of the grouchy older gentleman at the front desk at night :-)
