Hidden in the heart of the maze of narrow lanes that the Barri del Carme is, the Valldigna Portal is the only remain of the city wall during the muslim domination. Actually, the gate was opened in the beginning of the XV century to communicate the walled city with the Moreria, an extramura district populated by Moors.

Later on, a building was incorporated to the portal in the XVII century and, finally, a retable depicting King James I was added in the XIX, giving the portal its present appearance.
