Next is the Neue Museum (1843?59), designed by Friedrich August Stüler, was built to relieve the Alte Museum, which was quickly becoming too small. The interior design of the building, which presents the history of humankind, is decorated in historical styles which relate directly to the objects exhibited and the epochs they represent. Completely destroyed during air raids, the master plan is to restore it by 2008 to plans drawn up by the architect David Chipperfield.
The Nationalgalerie, now the Alte Nationalgalerie, was also conceived by Stüler from 1867?76 as a "Temple of the Sciences", and completed by Johann Heinrich Strack; it was then used to exhibit a collection of contemporary German art. The building, with its large external staircase and bronze statue of Friedrich Wilhelm IV. on horseback, was rebuilt in the 1950s and has been undergoing expensive restoration since 1997. In December 2001 the Alte Nationalgalerie has been reopened. The museum presents painting and sculptures of 19th century artists like Adolph von Menzel, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Auguste Rodin, Anselm Feuerbach, Arnold Böcklin, Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth.
The Bodemuseum, a neo-baroque prestige building, was built around the turn of the last century. With its imposing dome and splendid entrance hall, the building seems to traverse the Spree like a ship. The museum's director, Wilhelm von Bode, conceived the interior of the building in such a way that each room was individually created in a style appropriate to the epoch exhibited there. The building is closed for renovation until 2005. Its picture collection can be viewed in the Gemäldegalerie (Painting Gallery) at the »Kulturforum.
The last building on the island is the Pergamonmuseum, which was only completed in 1930. The main attractions are the Altar of Zeus from Pergamon, the Processional Avenue and Gate of Ishtar from Babylon and the Roman gate from Milet.
