"Museumsinsel (Museum Island)" Museum Island Museumsinsel Tip by budapest8

Museum Island Museumsinsel, Berlin: 46 reviews and 76 photos

I enjoyed just walking around these museums and soaking up the culture, early morning before the hoards of tourists arrive or even dusk is better as I think much nicer to see a place in it`s element without swarms of people buzzing around with cameras.

The consort of museums found on the Museum Island is a unique cultural inheritance which unites five important museum buildings into a heterogeneous but harmonic ensemble on the River Spree.
The south of the island, near the Schlossbrücke bridge and the »Berlin Cathedral, is the location for the FIRST BUILDING, The Alte Museum (Old Museum), with the greenery of the Lustgarten stretching out in front of it. To the north, there is the Neue Museum (New Museum) and the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery). On the Kupfergraben side stands the Pergamonmuseum, with the Bode Museum completing the ensemble. The oldest museum complex in Berlin suffered more than 70 % destruction in the Second World War, and the painstaking work of restoration is a long way from being completed.
The Five Museums
The Alte Museum was built in 1830 to plans by Schinkel; its interior, particularly the domed rotunda, creates a wonderful atmosphere for the sculpture exhibited and the collection of ancient artworks.
