Yep, you got it right. Beer is considered food in Germany - is that not just sooo civilised???!!! There are hundreds of brands so everyone will find their favourite. The "pils" style is maybe the most famous, brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot, i.e. "purity laws" of old times, stating that nothing but malt, hops, yiest and water goes into beer. This makes it very easy to drink and you rarely get the beer-hangovers of for instance a night on lager in Britain. There are also other wonderful beer types such as Schwarzbier ("black beer") or the weak Koelsch, a local of Cologne which you drink in small glasses but which add up to MANY during a carnival night :))) In Duesseldorf there is the Alt tradition. Bamberg in Franken is known for its Rauchbier, a smoky type of beer not liked by everyone (I enjoy it) and for having lots of breweries in its closer region. Several othere cities also have more than one brewery such as Braunschweig, Dortmund...you name it. Sadly, the famous Becks brewery is now owned by Interbrew which has ruined so many Belgian breweries...go for something more local - enjoy!!! Often, a good German brewpub also serves typical and filling German food.
