Day 2 : Hofburg area
Opposite Albertina, at the small Albertina platz, there are some monuments for the victims of the war.
At this place there was once the Wiener Phillips Hof - a prestigious apartment?s house. But on March 12th of 1945, there was an air raid where hundreds of people were killed at this spot.
So in the Austrian Commemorative year of 1988, the city of Vienna decided to place a monument against War and Fascism at this site.
In font of the square there is the Gate of Violence, this gate is made of granite, just as the rocks in the quarry of the Mauthausen concentration camp that where hauled up the steep Stairs of death by thousands of camp inmates. This gate of Violence commemorates the victims of mass murder committed by the National Socialists in prisons and concentration camps like Mauthausen.
The rock covered with barb wire commemorates the victims of War and fascism and reminds us of the atrocities of the Nazi-regime.
