"Aegina" Greece Things to Do Tip by Callavetta

Just a short hop skip and jump from Pireaus by fast boat, the island of Aegina is close enough to be a commute trip but light years away in terms of pace. Arriving by sailboat, we tied up at the water front and hit the pavement (sidewalk) to find food. I had the single most wonderful giro I've ever eaten. Further along the harbor are charming little tavernas. Octopi hang from clothes lines, drying out before being BBQ'd. This is where we met the charming Costas who was proud to tell us about his special BBQ sauce, Costas Own. We lingered for most of the afternoon over bottles of wine and grilled octopus.
Take a taxi up to the Temple Aphaea. At the top of the island, you will pass acres and acres of pistachio groves, terraced cleverly into the hillsides. We had the Temple to ourselves. Every bit as dramatic as the more famous and far more crowded Acropolis, across the straights, visitors can feel the spirits of days gone by as they sit and meditate by themselves.
Be sure to purchase some pistachios to take home. The soil condition of Aegina produces some of the best nuts to be found in the world!
Directions: Fast boats take visitors to Aegina regularly throughout the day. Or stay overnight and see the charming villages after the daytrippers go home.
