The Duomo of Firenze (also known as Basilica Santa Maria del Fiore) is absolutely beautiful. Building of this landmark started in 1295 and was consecrated after its completion (in 1434) by Pope Eugenius IV in 1435. Many artists contributed to works inside Il Duomo including Donatello and Paolo Ucello.

There are three parts of Il Duomo that I found particularly interesting:

First is the painting on the ceiling of the interior of the dome. It is just an icredfible painting with so much colour and life. The frescoes are painted by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari and contains scenes from the Last Judgement.

Also the 24 hour clock is cool, because I have never seen an analog clock that literally shows all the 24 hours separately.

But I?d have to say that the view from the top of Il Duomo is the best part of this basilica - for more on that check out my tip below.

You can also go beneath Il Duomo. There is a souvenir shop there and you can go and see the tombstones in the crypt of Santa Reparata. Santa Reparata was the name of a church that used to stand in the same place as Il Duomo stands now.
