"Washington's Obelisk" Washington Monument Tip by mattreider
Washington Monument, Washington D.C.: 124 reviews and 230 photos
The Washington Monument is one of the most recognized symbols of the Capital City. However, taking the elevator to the top is also one of the most popular, and therefore plan accordingly.
Go early in the morning to get your timed ticket at the ticket kiosk at 15th Street (closer to the Capital Building) Hours of operation are 9:00 am to 4:45 pm daily.
A few years ago, extensive rework had to be done on the aging mason exterior. A clever trellis of scaffolding was designed by MIchael Graves that mimicked the brick outline of the structure, and once built was very popular. Web sites were formed asking that the scaffolding remain permanently, but alas, the structure was removed after renovations were complete.
Either way, the various stones donated by all the states and other national organizations that line the inside of the monument show how respected Washington has become in our national consciousness.
