  Deer along the highway!
by Ewingjr98

In Clarion County, it has been estimated that one deer is killed by a car each day. Not only does this mean a lot of dead deer, but each deer strike causes thousands of dollars in damage to your vehicle.

Be alert, especially at dusk. If you see one deer run across the road, slow down and be prepared to stop. Deer rarely travel alone... if one crosses in front of you, others will surely follow.

Keep a lookout for their green reflective eyes along the road. You will almost always see the eyes before you see the deer. Every second counts!

Finally, if a deer does suddenly jump in your path, brake rapidly, but do not swerve recklessly... many car end up in the ditch or against a tree while trying to avoid deer. You will end up with less damage if you just hit the deer.

I remember when I was in Colorado back in 1996 or so and I heard on the radio that Clarion County Prison was considering feeding the county's roadkill deer to the prisoners. To those of us from Clarion, no big deal. To the rest of the country it was hilarious but cruel and unusual...
