Along with the smaller Fischbrunnen (Fish Fountain) the Mariensäule (Marien Column) fill up the space in the square. The Mariensäule is delicate tower stretching up to a point where it is topped by a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary. It's the work of a sixteenth century Dutch sculptor Hubert Gerhard, whose work abounds in the city. The column sits on a square plinth with four armoured cherubs on each corner, each slaying some mythical beast.
