I didn't see very many people begging in Firenze, as opposed to Rome where I had just come from. I remember seeing one or two people at the train station, but the guards told them to leave the area.
I didn't have any trouble (as a single female) when I was walking around on my own in Firenze, except for once. I was on my way back to my B&B, crossing Ponte Vecchio when a guy was trying to stop me (I think he was trying to sell something), I went to move right (and pass him) he blocked me, I moved left, he blocked me, then I sped up and kept on walking past him. I didn't think he was going to do anything, I didn't feel I was in any harm (there were heaps of people around me) - but if anyone, male or female, gets blocked like this, just keep on walking, you'll be fine.
