  Extra-long busses in Curitiba.

Basically, unless you buy an AirPass outside of Brazil, forget about buying plane tickets while there. Busses are nicer than in the States in Brazil and an efficient way to travel. Have not tried hitchiking, but hear that it is safe in some places (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina).

Train transporation is almost non-existent in Brazil except in the south there is a train from Curitiba to the coast.

In São Paulo, the Metrô (subway) is the best way to get around and in Rio, you are probably best off with a Taxi Commum (one of the yellow ones). Curitiba has the best public bussing system in the world (for real).
