"Dean Cemetery" Edinburgh Things to Do Tip by zizkov

On my most recent visit to the Dean Gallery (Henri Cartier-Bresson, not as interesting as I expected), I was struck by a particularly vibrantly Autumn-hued tree. I took a couple of photographs, and realised it was not in the gallery grounds (well, the boundary wall gave that away), but in the neighbouring Dean Cemetery (and the gravestones gave that away). I hadn't paid it any attention before, but, being a fine day, decided to investigate.

There is a small, almost hidden gate between the properties, to the side of the gallery car park. The cemetery itself is a fair size, with mainly simple, though sizable, memorials, and a fine selection of trees. Memorials are mainly from the 1800s, some from before (though truthfully I did not attend overmuch to the details).

The first picture is the view which initially caught my fancy. The stones in the foreground are part of the Gallery's sometimes headscratching park sculpture collection.
