Day 2 : Hofburg area

In the middle of the Heldenplatz (Memorial of Heroes) you can see a beautiful statue; it is the Equestrian statue of Archduke Charles. This statue was sculptured by Anton Dominik Fernkorn between 1853 and 1859. The plinth of the statue is made by Edward van der Null.

As I visited the Heldenplatz; I noticed something remarkable, some locals were working in some kind of small gardens. I thought by myself, what a strange place to do this, as this was kind of a historical spot.
But a signboard brought the solution, it was part of a remembrance project:

and this part were named - Peace ploughed:

In 1945 potatoes were grown on Heldenplatz because survival was the primary challenge for the population during the last years of the war and the period after. So meadows and parks had been transformed into agricultural fields overnight. On the occasion of the Commemorative Year 2005, 25Peaces will again turn the Heldenplatz into agriculturally useable areas during the gardening season. A number of inhabitants will privately beds and grow vegetables. As a symbol of times when Austrians had to fight for food and
could not simply take, it from a shelf in the supermarket.
