"Quokkas" Rottnest Island Things to Do Tip by akikonomu

Rottnest Island Things to Do: 134 reviews and 234 photos

The native marsupial of Rottnest, it is a small brown creature, of about 40 to 50cm (those i saw). When it moves, it hops like kangaroos. Gentle and mostly found foraging in the shade of fallen trees, they are rather strange animals that'll remain statuesque while you stare at them or take photos of them.

I thought what Ken, our guide said rather apt and funny. He said they neither burrow nor do anything, just stand there all the time. It's true, I got really close up to one of them, slowly composed my shot and even after the camera click, it continued sitting at its original spot (see picture).

However, some of them carry diseases (maybe ticks or rabies??) so it's not wise to stroke or touch them.
