If you want to be outside of Newcastle, you can stay in a town called Ashington which is part of Northumberland about 16 miles from Newcastle. I stayed at a little inn called the Black Diamond Inn which is a fabulous and famous place in Ashington. It was 32 pound a nite for a single room with breakfast! I was in a room with 2 single beds, my own TV, coffee/tea facilities, and my own shower and toilet. It was clean, pretty quite, and a great staff, they also had a good breakfast. It's not glamorous or luxurious by far, BUT, it was clean, comfortable, and warm and that's what's important to me. The inn itself is connected to 3 restaurants/bars, there's Jennica's which is an Italian restaurant, the Black Diamond bar, and Lounge 29 bar. All of them have great food for a good price, serve drinks, and right next door is the sister club of the Black Diamond, Bubbles Wine Bar. All in all it was good value for your money, you're not far from Newcastle, but also close to Alnwick and other towns along the coast worth taking a drive to.
Unique Qualities: Like I mentioned earlier, you have choice of restaurants and bars, it's just round the corner from Ashington high street with nice shops, and just a nice little get away from the hustle and bustle of Newcastle. They offer a GREAT Sunday roast, I always have to go there for Sunday roast everytime I visit. Plus, Jennica's has an excellent menu!
