World Cup and wilderness. That's how I would summarise this large village with Sweden's only Alpine cable car, which is alive all year round these days, but never more so than wintertime when it usually hosts at least one World Cup downhill ski event and everyone seems to meet here for fun after-ski and general socialising. This is when Åre is at its most expensive as all hotels and supermarkets charge High season prices. I remember visiting as a child in 1977 and although being full of skiers, it was a quiet place compared to the winters of today. In summer, it calms down considerably, although mountainbiking down the slopes of the dominating Åreskutan mountain is rapidly catching on and all the hotel ski storage facilities then facilitate for bikes instead. But Åre is so much more as long as you like the outdoors. You can escape to the mountains around it to do some reindeer spotting whilst trekking, or to one of the impressive waterfalls nearby. If that is not enough, there is beaver safaris, Icelandic horse trekking or a daytrip to Norway.
Directions: In the highlands of Jämtland in mid-Sweden.
