"Public Transportation - Using trains" China Transportation Tip by Shixitong

China Transportation: 268 reviews and 211 photos

(contd from booking train tickets...)
On the train ticket you will see a lot of Chinese characters and a few numbers. The first number is the train compartment. The second number is your seat. At the entrance to every compartment an employee will check your ticket, and in case of "doubledeckers" tell you whether you have to go up (shang) or down (xia).
The platform number from wich your train departs will be shown on electronic displays inside the waiting lounge. Don't worry if you cannot read Chinese. Just wait till your train's number pops up and wait for the next message on the same display. That will give you the platform number you have to head for. In China, it is not possible to wait at the platform. There are certain waiting lounges in every train station, staring the "boarding" process about 10 minutes prior to the train's departure.
