"British Museum - History Buff's Paradise" British Museum Tip by Jase1177
British Museum, London: 318 reviews and 592 photos
The British Museum is one of the preemminent history and cultural museum in the world. Since its founding in 1753, it has acquired and offered up some of the rarest and most fascinating finds from around the world. Despite one's feelings on how they were obtained or if they should be returned to homelands, the displays in the British Museum are outstanding.
There are nearly 90 rooms of displays in the museum, with several of the rooms being large grand halls. Definitely plan to spend a few hours going through the museum, especially if you are one to read and gaze at nearly everything. There are collections covering most of the world, with special emphasis on Egypt, the Middle East, Greece, the Roman Empire, and Europe. The Egyptian displays are said to the be the largest collection in the world outside of Cairo. The quality of the displays are amazing and rich with historical significance and insight.
Some of the more famous objects are the Rosetta Stone (which was the key to translating hieroglyphics), Lindow Man (old human remains in Britain), the Gutenberg Bible, sculptures from the Greek Parthenon, and the only surviving manuscript of the Beowulf . One of my favorite displays was the Money Room, which is devoted to the concept and history of money since its origins. I have always been fascinated by the concept of money and how it takes it different forms.
