This museum at Cairo has over 120000 items ? in fact so many that it cannot display them all at any one time. When I was there it was the old museum before the modern structure was built. At that time many of the exhibits were poorly displayed and the museum was always crowded. However, it was still amazing to actually view the ancient treasures and to marvel at the detailed craftsmanship.
The mummy collection is vast and includes many famous names from the 18th to 20th dynasties Ramses (I , II, III, IV, V, VI), Tuthmosis (I,II,III), Seti (I, II) and Amenhotep (I,II, III) among others.
The museum was built in 1900 by French Architect Marcel Dourgnon to house the collections that were once held in the Azbakian Garden in Cairo !
There is a small charge for cameras and further charges for video equipment. There is also an additional charge into the Mummies rooms.
