Favorite thing: The Blue Guide to China is still one of the best guide books to the historical and archaeological sites in China. Frances Wood is a real expert on the subject, especially the Silk Road, so particularly useful on Beijing, Xi'an and Dunhuang.

However, note that her travel and accommodation advice is WAY out of date now!
