The Bjäre Peninsula belongs to my favourite parts of south Sweden. There is something about its relaxed atmosphere where new potatoes are carefully harvested in the fields, yet the very same potatoes end up in classy restaurants that satisfy the most spoilt Stockholmer. The hub of the peninsula is Båstad in the north-east, with its railway connections. It is a small town, along the dramatic Halland Ridge, which is buzzing in summer when the Swedish Open tennis championships make nightlife on par with Stockholm and you need to book accommodation well in advance. Avoid those weeks or visit the lovely peninsula itself, and you will find self-service vegetable stalls along the hilly seaview roads, the dramatic Hovs Hallar cliff landscape and plenty of pretty farms and quiet beaches. The area is also littered with ancient burial mounds and has been inhabited a long time.
Directions: The north-western corner of Scania.
